Parking on Cycle Lanes

Previous Myths

Parking on Cycle Lanes

There are two types of cycle lanes:

Mandatory Lanes

· provided by way of a Traffic Regulation Order

· bounded by a solid white line

· other traffic is excluded from entering or parking in them during the hours of operation (with the exception of emergency services vehicles, as well as taxis and buses in some cases)

Advisory Lanes

· provision does not require a Traffic Regulation Order

· bounded by a broken white line

· other vehicles must not use the cycle lane or park in it unless doing so is unavoidable

The Highway Code advises that drivers of vehicles:

MUST NOT stop or park on

· a tram or cycle lane during its period of operation

· a cycle track

But any vehicle may enter a bus lane to stop, load or unload where this is not prohibited

& DO NOT stop or park

where you would obstruct cyclists’ use of cycle facilities except when forced to do so by stationary traffic
