Cycling for Health & Lifestyle

Health and lifestyle

Cycling is a healthy activity but always consult your own GP if you are in any way concerned about your health

Regular cycling has a positive effect on fitness and health. The link between regular exercise and good health has been established in research studies throughout the world including publications of the British Medical Association (BMA 1990). Health benefits from cycling range from maintaining a healthy heart to developing strength, stamina, and good posture.

Cyclists generally have a greater sense of well-being and often have lower stress levels than those who do not cycle. These benefits far outweigh the potential exposure to pollution and danger on the roads.

Cycling could also help prevent the serious health consequences that face a large number of children who do not exercise. More children could be encouraged to cycle to school by developing safer and more appropriate cycle routes, along with training.

Cycling is highly time efficient, being faster than any other transport mode available for short to medium distances. It also offers flexibility, with individuals able to personalise the route their journey takes according to their specific needs.

Cycling creates greater travel choices, as people do not have to cycle every day if it is not convenient.
